Encouraging growth

This is the glacier Cherry branch on my 5(4):1 Raintree Cherry. The only bud leafed out but I need a shoot. Could I make a horizatal slice into the cambian about an inch above the graft to encourage a shoot to form?

@Drew51 Drew I was wondering if you think if heading back the terminal ends will encourage growth on these Ribes.

So after a year it still looks like this only with out leaves. Can anything be done to encourage this single bud to grow into a branch.

I missed this somehow. Not sure what you should do?

Back again

This is the bud today. My question is how should I remove the bud so that it regrow. I think I should just rub it away?

Won’t a cut above the bud encourage it to grow out? I haven’t tried this yet, but plan to do so this year on a couple trees that don’t have scaffolds where I’d like them. I understand you can score the tree with a utility knife (a thin cut) above the bud and it will encourage the bud to grow out and the thin cut will heal readily. Hopefully someone with experience with this technique will chime in.

AndySmith, lord kiwi ,yes cut above the bud ( shoot)

Tried that last year

Tried that last year. The previous year that bud flowered. I think I need to remove it for it to redevelop a limb bud. but if I yank it off wont that stop it from developing.

I don’t think removing it is the answer ,
Notching above the bud,and heading back the other growing points , ( pinching back ,this time of year) will encourage it to grow,
Just convince it that you won’t allow it to grow anywhere but there,
( lots of pinching growing points) and a good shot of nitrogen.

I have a whole tree 4 other grafts growing. this is the only bud of this particular cherry. I already headed the most dominate shoot. I will try heading off the others but I think that bud is set in its ways as a flower bud.
