I haven’t watched all the videos linked above, but the Allthefruit channel on YT guy was showing a kiwiberry farm that I think was in Germany where they did significantly cut back the vegetative growth twice in a season. The specifics of whether they went with some bud count or if they just hedged them at the desired height/distance into the rows weren’t provided or apparent to me.
People often just do their own thing because that’s how the person they learned from did it and it works well enough, or because that’s what the time and resources allow and it gets the desired result usually.
The one take home message I got from the array of kiwiri videos I watched was “you can never cut too much” on a kiwi. So, you could always experiment with one half v the other and see what happens next year. I think you could cut it all off and still have vigorous growth next year? In some videos it seems he cuts 90% of the plant off.
I missed quite a few messages. Kiwiri is legit. This guy’s grandfather has been breeding argutas for decades, from before the fall of the Berlin wall, and they had a huge role in introducing this fruit to the German market. my MSU looks the worst. anna and male are both putting on new growth. all 3 have been fertilized with 10-10-10 twice this year. they are mulched and i water every day.
id say its a silty clay to silty clay loam. this hole was dug about 50’ from where the kiwis are. the kiwi holes were darker so probably more silt over there.
I have a Tatyana and Natasha growing neglected on a fence for several years. The deer enjoy them. I’ll have to check if any sign of fruit. I suspect not.
