Fall T budding, peaches & apples

I would appreciate advice and input.

It’s the last day of Sept, and our high temps are still in the 90s, lows in the low 70s. Next week we are finally supposed to start cooling off and have some days in the mid 70s. Finally. It has been unseasonable hot and dry in Kansas, hottest September we’ve had in a long long time.

I’ve been too busy to keep up with everything I had planned for spring, and didn’t graft as much as I wanted to. I have some left over dormant apple scions that didn’t all get used for spring grafting. Can I T bud graft those now with any hope of success?

I would also like to try T bud some peaches, but with current year’s growth. Worth a try?

You can only T bud onto wood that has slipping bark. And only onto this year’s growth. T budding doesn’t work if the bark on the stock is thick.

This late you’re more likely to have success with chip buds.

Don’t have to look too far:

Agree with suggestions, if you have temps above mid60s for at least three weeks it should work well. Worth a try

Even though temperatures are warm, growth has already ceased with the approach of Fall. It is very difficult to get bark to slip once growth has ceased for the year. Also you would be better off harvesting fresh scions if you have them available. The dormant bud at base of the leaf petiole for next years growth has already been set. Those buds are “fresher”. Slice the bud off that fresh scion and then clip the leaf blade off the petiole before grafting.

Thank you @TurkeyCreekTrees. I will harvest fresh peach scion, and a few apple that I have. Unfortunately I don’t have access to all of the apple I wanted to graft, other than dormant scions.

Thanks @marknmt! I had watched several of JSacadara’s videos on Tbudding yesterday. I was going to go back to you his youtube channel and see what he has for chip budding. I appreciate the links!

@DennisD, I don’t think temps should be a problem! We should have plenty more warm weather this fall by the looks of it.
