OGW confirmed by email yesterday that all the “pineapple guava “ they sell have been grafted.
I cut back the dead top branches bit by bit and there was no green… no life.
Sad
. When I received the plant summer of 2025 it was in bloom ! So pretty.

Bummer on that. But they seem to get harder with trunk size like citrus. My first plants got knocked back every year for the first 2 or 3 but haven’t dropped a leaf since. You can get budwood from Fruitwoodnursery or Marta to regraft to a named variety on that rootstock.
I see you are in 8b. Just a bit warmer than my zone 8a.
I’m thinking to try burying the trunk with sand or wrapping it with foam or something this coming winter.
Have you done anything to help get your Feijoas through the winter ? Maybe you have a better idea.
I will take a look at Fruitwood Feijoa budwood.
When would be optimal time of year to graft ? Assuming my Kakariki can grow a sizeable branch over this summer.
Thanks for the suggestion.
I did Mulch way up the trunks for the next year or so after that first winter damage. I haven’t noticed that using any other material made any difference. I generally graft feijoas in Spring or early summer like citrus.
