Feijoas - pineapple Guavas

Can’t say I’m a fan. Here near Houston feijoas are sold as landscape plants. The fruit is awful. I pulled up several large examples from my front flower beds. They produced large but inedible IMHO fruit. A friend is importing many named varieties from California to Texas and trialing them near Austin,TX. Perhaps he will some day convince me they are worth growing!

Very nice article. I really enjoy this fruit. I find them far superior to regular guavas – atleast the high quality named varieties. I eat them skin and all.

Feijoa is among my favorite of fruits. Got addicted to them growing up in Southern California, where they are also used as landscape shrubs. I once ate 60 of them at one go. Now I buy up every named variety I can find - I wish more were readily available.

Nazemetz, Apollo, Nikita. Only Nazemetz is old enough to bear fruit. Still waiting on the others. Nikita is a really slow grower - Apollo is fast.

For some reason I have 2 Mammoth and 1 Nikita at my current place. They barely grew at all the first several years. I finally gave them some nitrogen this spring and they’ve really responded.

Nikita has been more vigorous than Mammoth for me.

I loved feijoas when visiting New Zealand years ago, and this year my New Orleans bushes produced a lot of fruit, but the fruit has all fallen off yet doesn’t appear anywhere near ripe. I am wondering if they are edible, they look like feijoas. I guess I will try ripening in paper bag but, why did they all fall off? I have been watering when necessary tho it has been really hot (over 90) here. Thanks for any suggestions
