My little layer that I kept and potted up just started setting lots of figs! Crazy little thing.
Really impressive ingenuity and use of space

How do you control the black fig flies in your setup?
@unnwa
At present I am trialing closed-eye figs. I also fertigate with Gnatrol.
How do we use Gnatrol? Spray on ground?
I am slow. Do you spray inside a circle on the ground around the fig or ?
So since i do not have an irrigation system, i shd directly spray the root zone?
@unnwa
Gnatrol is a bacterial larvicide. We are not trying to apply it to roots. Instead we are trying to inoculate any soil, mulch, etc. that black fig fly larvae might have fallen into for their long winter nap. There are several bacterial larvicide products available to consumers. Always ready the label before purchase and then again before application.
That makes me wonder if the fig trees that start dropping their leaves because of the weather change be more inclined to be more cold hardy? With some trees the more cold hardy ones go dormant and drop their leaves quicker, sometimes even before it freezes outside.
@KS_razerback
The end-of-year temperature changes here are far more gradual than yours and it never reaches freezing. It would be interesting read about leaf-out and leaf-fall dates in hardiness zones 11 through 14 verses hardiness of the same clones in zones 8, 7, and 6.
I’d be very interested in that too. Also if it made a difference if they are in ground vs potted. I would almost say I could try doing the recording, but I don’t know if I want to take care of that many fig varieties. I do know of someone somewhat nearby to me that has a lot of potted fig varieties that I may be able to get the data from.
