Fig: will these ripen?

Trying to decide whether to let them hang or pick and toss them in the compost… there’s one that’s approaching soft I’d try to eat but not the rest. Our daytime temps are mid 50s to low 60s though there’s some additional reflected heat from the wall.

You might get a couple to ripen up enough to be enjoyable. I’ve picked a few lately that were pretty good. Ones picked in Nov were excellent if allowed to fully ripen. My greenhouse was 80-90 high in Nov. 50s since Nov 28.

I’ve left some on a tree through the whole winter and through the early spring. After new leaves developed, some ripened buy they all tasted bad. I pick them off now.

I have heard other people have success in getting good figs.

If you move your pot indoors and grow under light, you may get them ripen. But since the tree is dropping leaves and doing dormant, the ripening has slowed quite a bit…

I think I’ll try to thin quite a bit in case the last of the juices would be just enough for a few.

It set quite late, I believe to do with my repotting a little too late in Spring. Next year I think they’ll ripen up sooner.

With no leaves left, there would not be much sugar/falvor anyways. Better to save tree energry to grow/fruit next season. May be you can leave a couple to try. Next season you can remove small figs earlier.

I’ll leave 3-4, those that are mostly purple already, and cull the rest. I wasn’t sure how much to thin this year, removed probably half when they were pea size or a little larger (mostly the ones closer to branch tips). Internodes were so close together… I assume because it is potted. I may also play with additional fertilizer.
