Figs 2026

peachy is not normally a flavor i associate with chichago hardy. i think this might be an english brown turkey, judging by the light color as well. They have a really good peach flavor. Melon is a normal flavor in underripe figs, its why they stil ltaste decent lol

Col de Dame blanc and Golden Rainbow. I really like Col de Dame, but in my location, it’s not very productive relative to the amount of vegetative growth it makes. Golden Rainbow, in contrast, is very productive and makes huge figs.

It doesn’t quite look like a Olympic fig to me. What does the Olympics leaves look like?

It also doesn’t look like Chicago Hardy to me. Too round, not dark/purple skinned, round rather th as n long, not dark red enough inside, etc.

Here’s some more of today’s harvest-

Then maybe I need to get starts from someone elses Chicago hardy to compare? I do want to get a real long row of figs going in-ground and made up of quite a few varieties.
The pictures of the Olympian fig looks more brownish on the inside while mine are very red.

Yeah for me Olympian is usually mostly beige, never gets that much red.

These figs don’t seem really ripe. Try giving them at least 2 more days.

olympian isnt the only english brown turkey fig out there. but i think they get plenty red

Yeah, for me it’s still pretty hot when Olympian ripens, so I don’t get that kind of color in it but I could see cooler temperatures making a difference.

I would have, but it was going to rain a lot and ants were trying to have heyday on them.

I ate this season’s first Gisotta Nero main crop fig yesterday and it was fabulous. Wish I remembered to take photos. Last year, Gisotta Nero was my least favourite of the five fig varieties I have. I don’t know if the difference is owing to the weather this year, the age of the plant (reaching its second year of production), or some other factor, but wow what a difference.

Chicago Hardy was my best producer this year and is winding down now. The season will probably be over in a couple more weeks. A lot of my figs will barely be ripe on time, or won’t ripen before winter sets in.

Fig trees under water.

They don’t usually need that much water, at least not all at once.

I was about to ask if anyone knew of anything good to add to make the soil drain better here?

I don’t think better drainage would fix that….

Yikes! Remnants of Hurricane Polo eh?

the ants thing is probably the most reliable sign honestly, by the time they’re soft enough to feel properly the ants are usually already there first. the chicago hardy vs brown turkey mix-up happens a lot at nurseries, wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what’s going on with the lighter colour and peach flavour.

How did you root this? I want to take some similar cuttings.

Premixed some potting soil & water in a bucket. Five parts soil & one part water. Rooted it outside in the complete shade in August/September. Not shown is the regular plastic drink lid that was placed over it for weeks. Lid was cut & removed after roots were fairly well established.

I let the potted trees dry out after the big storm, then did what might be the last big pick of the season. We ate a bunch of figs, then set the rest to drying. I had 7 trays like this one:
