Does fire blight go away on it’s own sometimes? My new, poorly treated, 4-in-one, big box store, pear tree had all sorts of problems last year (first year) including black edges on many leaves…then more than edges. This year there is no sign of trouble. I figured it was fire blight but I don’t know if it is a year-to-year infection and goes away over Winter or if the problem wasn’t fire blight. Any ideas?
It well could have been fb. It’s highly variable from yr to yr. Tends to hit when one thinks they’ve won. But it’s favored by warm wet weather during bloom. Can strike at other times for sure esp if there is vigorous new growth.
The tree was in a very weak state last year…had already flowered and lost some blossoms, still in the bag o’ sawdust at the store, bare root. It struggled, but this year = lookin’ good. I didn’t know if fire blight was a one way street. I didn’t treat it at all last year…I still know so little, but I’m learning. Thanks!
Fireblight is like chicken poxes it’s never really gone just laying up to become shingles later.
What Clark says. It’s not cured -just under control for now!
Hmmm…and yet, we are supposed to spray, and prune out ‘attacks.’ That sounds like it’s a new attack whenever it happens…like it’s coming from the outside each time. I have an orchard book that I need to get out…I have to learn more about this (and everything else). I guess the good news is that whatever it was (I’m still not positive it was fire blight) it doesn’t appear to be causing any problems for now…hiding maybe? I now have a total of 5 pear trees (overwhelming, eh, Clark? ha ha), all Euro types and so far only the one store-bought 4-or-5-in-one, poorly treated one has shown any problems. Thanks for the responses.
