The flowers were in tight clusters and I only see a little brown color at the crown.

That’s great news! I’m hoping to get something from some euro pears and apples although the early ones are likely toast.

Man, I feel sorry for all the fruit losses. It’s a tough go on the East coast. Every year you can read the same type threads; early warmth late Feb/Mar, everyones trees break dormancy, then bam! A late season freeze, followed by sorrow. Best of luck all, hopefully some pull through.

Dissect two of pear flower buds, one is toasted, another one seems fine. pray for the best.

I think you and I don’t have to thin them at all this year because some of the flowers are frozen out.

@thecityman it looks like we got really cold last night down the at least 29 degrees. All of my persimmons that significantly budded out sustained total or near total damage to their shoots. The ones that were slower to wake up might have gotten a pass. I hope the damaged trees don’t die. If some do, I can quickly replace them with the dozen or so grafted persimmons I made last year that are still potted and protected indoors.

Pawpaw flower buds look burned and I’m not sure about how my pears and peach fared. The leaves on everything else perked back up after it warmed up other than for some burnt fig, and hardy kiwi leaves.

I should at the very least have a good fig, berry, and maybe jujube harvest this year.

@tonyOmahaz5 I’m glad to see your trees aren’t so advanced. You’ll likely still get a decent pear harvest!

It was 30F here last night, many new kiwi shoots got fried but the flower buds still look OK on them. Hopefully new leaves will grow fast enough to feed the flowers. All the other fruits look OK.

@Susu yours looks much better than most of mine. They were expending their leaves before the freeze. They were all wilted and darkened by lunchtime.

Seems like NCWV is freezing everyother Day. What Ive started outside so far is well protected thankfully. I’ve collected the wire from political signs for years and use them to build Hot tunnels for Sprouts & etc. Helpful also having access to Plastic & Electrical supplies from Random past Jobs.

We had 15f this week with a couple 20-25f days after that. Had lots of apples with first pink, might have been a few tight clusters. All 20 peaches were full bloom-first pink. Doesn’t look promising out there.

The local weather station says it got down to 25 last night, looks like pluots are toast, most persimmon buds look dead, pawpaw flowers bigger than a pea are done. Forecast was 32, but no clouds or wind near dawn on the chart so I tipped all my compost sock fig trees which had swollen buds and small leaves and covered them just in case, left a few out as canaries and their buds were all soft though the wood did not look damaged yet.

My Bartlett Pear dropped about half its blooms( according to my mom) although my pawpaw seems ok so far… late freezes suck

i am sorry to hear you got hit too. So many of us took hits this year. I was just thinking of you today because I was examining my Jilin pear I got from you. I told you a week or so ago that it had one bunch of blooms on it this year so I was hopeful some would get pollinated. I wasn’t smart enough to think to hand pollinate them like you did!! ha. But as it turned out, 3 of the flowers ended up forming nice little fruitlets that were growing well. And my freeze didn’t kill them- perhaps because they were so low on the tree. But I still have bad news!!! THe 3 pears are already completely overcome by fungus- pear rust of some kind. I shouldn’t be surprised. Directly beside it is a pear tree that is the most susceptible of all of my varieties. They get bright orange hairs and teh babies get deformed first and then fall off. SO these are goners. It’s mostly my fault. If I spray early and often with captan and myclobutonil then it probably would have prevented this. But I’ve been busy and done a terrible job spraying this year so I’m paying the price. Anyway, its so frustrating that I could have had my first 2-3 pears from Jilin if I’d just been more proactive- and most years I am. Knowing the freeze didn’t get them makes it feel even worse!!!

So…I desperately hope some of yours make it because I’d really like to see these pears and hear a report and taste and texture, size, etc. Oh well…just like all my frost killed things…maybe next year!

It’s not looking good for me on Tuesday. Forecast says 29 and I’m pretty sure that the pears are going to bloom starting today.
