Frost on the peaches?

I have some peaches that are so slow to ripen, due to a long cold spring, that I am afraid that they may not ripen before frost. Can peaches take a little frost? Thanks Peggy

Peggy,
Where are you in zone 5? It is always helpful to put your location in your profile. Same fruit in the same zone but different locations may have different issues and results.

What variety is your peach? I don’t have this issue but am tagging forum members who are in zone 5 and grow peaches here @maineorchard, @MaureeninMaine, @bberry, @applebacon, @Barkslip, et al.

Hopefully, they can share their experience with you.

Hi there and thanks for the help. I am growing an Early Elberta peach in Taos, NM, at 7600 feet. the peaches are getting close to ripe and no frost yet!!! Peggy

Hi Peggy,

None of my peach trees bear fruit so late where I live that I have to worry about frost in late summer/fall. But I have had trees set fruit in the spring and lose every one of the peaches to frost. My opinion (and I stress opinion) is that frost would damage your peaches and likely ruin them. I know Apple growers in NC and Apples do get damage from fall frost, based off of there comments.

Curious, where did you purchase your Early Elberta trees and how old are they? How far away are they from ripening? Can you pick now and counter ripen some of the peaches?

Hope your peaches make it.

Spud
