Golden Currants

I planted roughly 100 golden currant as part of my ecobuffer this spring. I’ll try to remember to make note of the plants over the next couple years.

I believe I replied the same to a golden currant topic earlier this year.

Edit: I guess it was 150. It’s all a blur at this point. Should be a good sample size regardless.

I guess that I don’t understand what you’re saying.
From my research, the Crandall currant WAS a named variety of the clove currant, just because some people grew out seedlings of Crandall and chose to wrongly call them Crandall doesn’t mean that the original plant that RW Crandall grew and named wasn’t a variety.
There are plants out there that were not true clones of the Crandall, but were called Crandall.

True that there was a clove currant named Crandall. But that’s not necessarily what you get when you purchase a Crandall currant, because seedling were also sold under that name.

However, many people who have purchased their ‘Crandall’ from Whitman Farms have confirmed that it matches descriptions and is true to type. Whether or not it’s the “real” ‘Crandall’ or not, hers is clonally propagated and has all the characteristics that it’s supposed to have. It’s a cultivar best suited for production by “mom & pop” type nurseries cause the larger scale nurseries simply can’t produce it in mass unless they resort to planting seeds (and then mislabel those seedlings as being the cultivar). It’s not hard to propagate on a smaller scale.

I went over and dug up a 5’ tall clump and brought it home tonight.

I’m gonna get it in the ground this weekend, along with some cornelian cherries I got from Cricket Hill and some sterile comfrey starts I got from Edible Landscaping, so I should be able to start rooting cuttings next year.

Especially since I’m going to build a mist box by summertime to further my propagation/nurseryman pursuits.

We’ll see how things go, but those of you who have pinged me are likely to get messages from me in summer 2027 asking if you still want a plant or two.

I’ll post a picture tomorrow, when it’s light out.
