Land / space is an issue. I guess I could build something homemade and affordable if I had the space.

You don’t need a full out GH to do a lot. A frame and some poly like @DavidinVermont will get you a lot longer growing season and protection from several things. In summer covering a frame like that in hail/bird netting keeps out animals and even larger insects.
