I just got a shipment of scion wood. They added a bunch of extra scions. I would like to have the scions next year but all my rootstock is grafted. I cut back all my mature trees hard over the winter. A lot of the green growth is a foot long. Can green growth be used. I just want to try to save the scions not really Frankenstein the tress. I have a couple of dwarf centennial crabs that are easy to reach and are growing crazily. Yes I know it is very late but I hate to pitch 20+ scions of espous, king of pippins, etc.
Following but some questions and thoughts:
-
Who still had dormant scionwood this late? Is it even still viable?

Dunno about grafting onto this seasonâs growth, but you could presumably cut into last years wood and cleft graft to save them.
Thanks! I donât want to name nurseryâs. It took a month before they were delivered though. They seem viable (?) - green cambium. I had WT take when I did them a month ago. Just would be a lot easier to graft onto the green wood on my dwarves than the last years wood on my standards.
Nice, Iâve been using a âCentennialâ as rootstock for a frankentree and it has been VERY good at accepting grafts. I think itâs because itâs consistently early to wake up so grafted scions never wake up before the rootstock is ready to pump them full of sap.
I see no reason why it wouldnât work. Your best bet would probably be chip or t budding.
I have grafted to green wood this late. Most took but the surge of growth is less at this time of the year in central AL.
Thanks for the advice. I cleft grated the king of pippins and espous sp. onto old and green wood. I bud grafted the mcintosh and wolf river onto old wood. Quite fun!
I do. Yes, it is still viable. I was grafting this morning and will likely graft next weekend again.
You can definitely graft onto this seasonâs wood.
With the last batch of rain several of my cleft grafts just âwokeâ up. Some on centennial crab some on my âmysteryâ apple. Happy day! I had written them off!
Also a bunch of WT that were still dormant just took off.
My fridge always has some left over scion wood this time of year. I end of grafting it all out eventually, apples will take and then just push out leaves without any growth but theyâll take off next year. Results might vary if you have a long growing season, here we start getting frost in the first half of sept.
