Anybody have much luck bench grafting spurred up wood? I have had 2 individuals send me wood they want grafted from old trees and they had a very difficult time finding what we would typically consider good grafting wood. I tell them what to look for and the best locations to find it, but sometimes old trees are too tired to grow new wood. I dont want to recommend to someone to hack off a large piece of their tree in the hopes of getting a new flush of growth next year. If things dont go right I get the blame for killing their tree! I am going to experiment a bit and see if I can get if anything to take. I was hoping someone had a tip to share on that old spurred up wood or could tell me that it is a complete waste of time. Thanks!
One of my 9 yrs old Shinseiki Asian pear only had spur woods. Several back that I took a branch full of spur woods and Bark grafted on a large Callery branch and it took. The spurs sent out branches instead of flowers the fist season and full of fruits the third growing season.

I have also grafted overly spurry wood. It will take longer to get in growth mode but it will eventually get there. Pinch off any flowers early, and graft a good-sized piece so you get something besides flowers.
