Is this crown gall? New gratitude grapevine that I received and planted 4/6. I took this picture when I got it because it was suspicious, but had too much going on and forgot to email the nursery (Starks) and promptly forgot about it after it was planted. But, it’s not showing any signs of life, and the grape vines I bike by 20 minutes way are all growing, so I’m wondering now. I am totally new to grapes.
I don’t have an answer to your question, but I am responding to bump you up in hopes that someone does.
It finally started to leaf out and grow. I sent the picture to Starks that told me to do a scratch test and that they’ve sent the picture to the horticulturist…no response.
Starks just got back to me saying it’s not crown gall.
I got a gratitude grapevine from them as well, arrived in April also.
Mine is just starting to show signs of life and I was worried because it arrived with all of the material to keep it moist at the top of the plant instead of on the roots.
Same with my chestnut apple tree, they don’t seem to pack very well.
Luckily, both are showing signs of life.
I am new to grapes also.
I have heard Double A vineyards is awesome, but they won’t ship to me in California. I bet they would ship to you so check them out future grapes or berries.
I got Vanessa and Everest from Ison’s this year and both arrived in great condition and are starting to wake up.
Yesterday I grabbed an Autumn Royal from Costco, nice sized plant and good price. They also had Black Monukka. I have heard neither of those have a lot of flavor but I was intrigued With reports that autumn royal has nice size berries without girdling or any other treatment.
I was hoping I would find Summer Royal in the mix but either missed out or it wasn’t included in the shipment.
All sounds good. Vanessa and Everest came highly recommended by Isons when I talked to them agonizing over what to get, but I think they had lower texture scores, which was the most important quality for me. I only have room for one grape, so it either works or it doesn’t, and then I go on to contingency plant A, B and maybe even C for the new grape trellis
Well, I think you picked a great one texture wise. I have heard gratitude has a great texture.
I think Vanessa is also more crisp than soft, but I will let you know when I finally get grapes.
Everest might be a big juice grape for me. We love purple grape juice and grape juice popsicles.
What type of trellis are you going to use?
Keep in mind I’ve only read a lot and have no idea what I’m doing: we put in 4x4 posts sunk 32” for 9’ trellis for a double cordon system. That said. The wiring did not go as planned (posts not stable) removed it, and trying to figure out if the weird bracing plan has any chance of helping. YouTube video I found running the top wire after it goes through the post over a perpendicular 12” metal pipe and down to eye hook at the bottom of the post. I think the 9g wire was overkill for such a relatively small trellis and the one way anchors made it such that minor bracing wouldn’t matter. But, I have no idea. Here is the video tried to emulate.
We don’t have real earth where it’s placed- there was a gravel, rock and asphalt driveway all the way to the back of the property when it was build in 1970. So, everything is a lot of work to plant and build structures. We excavated a decent sized hole down to clay for the grape and holes for both posts. Next step might be to deconstruct it and just pour concrete in the post holes. I don’t have room for traditional back bracing on one side even if we cared to excavate more and backfill more (which we don’t!!!). All seems like overkill for one dinky trellis when I see videos of people putting them up with zero bracing (no idea how. Clearly in better ground than the rock crap). It might just get a cattle panel tacked to it…i would love a piece of metal on top to hold its shape, but haven’t figured out what/where I could get…since we had to take down the wires, and the grape wasn’t growing, I’ve neglected figuring it out. Sorry to dump! It’s been annoying me in the back of my head, and now I have to really figure it out. I have an engineer friend that is going to come over and think it over with me…
What are you building/have built?
