Growing pluot in zone 8b PNW

They’re probably a couple different, similar-appearing pluot cultivars with different ripening windows?

I like that AI generated question “are pluots genetically modified?”
It would come to question here especially with people such as myself who judge first impression of things in the literal sense. The only way a plum and a pomegranate could come together would be through GMO.
But then I remembered the other wacky names they are coming up with like Dinosaur Egg and it all makes sense… Just a marketing ploy.

So i bought a couple of those plumogranates and a couple of unidentified pluots, typical, maybe someone here can ID them, they are on the left.
The plumogranates seemed under ripe so Ill give the second one a little time.
The unknown pluots were just right, very juicy, sweet, semi firm, slightly tart skin.

Looks good. What did you think of it?

@murky. We like them a lot. Specially they are super crispy. My wife like them because sweet and tart tasting flavor not like all the others all sweet plum I had. Taste much better than the ones selling in store. Surprising me for ripening earlier than I expected. Now we had 2 Pluot varieties Splash and favor Greenade they’re both very tasty fruit. Pictures below my splash this year.

Yes, those two pluots are big winners in my opinion. I’m surprised your Flavor Grenade ripened so early too. A great thing about it is that it can hang on the tree for a long time and be still really good quality and texture.

That Splash looks just right inside.

Im curious, is that tartness your fond of a result of the skin as is typical of pluots?
The result of the Japanese plum crossings. Or is it something unique in the flesh?

@jcf Some thing in the flesh. Because we eat under ripening stage. We enjoyed that way. They’re sweeter if waiting longer time for harvesting.
@murky splash texture crisp and juicy as well Unfortunately I had only few fruits this year.
How do you think about Dapple Dandy, performing well here?

Vincent, good question about Dapple Dandy. I’ve probably never had well ripened Dapple Dandy, so I don’t really have a high opinion of it and haven’t tried to grow it.

But this year I’ve already changed my opinion on a few stone fruit because I was able to try good ones for the first time, or the first time in a while. One takeaway for me is that it may be related to more aggressive thinning and I’ll plan to push that further. It could also be quirks of weather or nutrition though. I’ll keep paying attention.

Normally I’d plan to use Beauty for cooking and Shiro for juicing, but this year its all fresh eating (also I still have jam and juice so the demand isn’t strong to justify the effort).

Splash is a standout for sugar/acid/flavor and beauty. But it gets more bugs, I’m seeing can crack, and needs lots of thinning. But it has a special place.

Flavor Grenade has incredible texture and keeping - stand out.

Flavor Supreme, Emerald Drop - Zero fruit, and very few fruit. Unless there’s a trick, there doesn’t seem to be much point of growing them.

Geopride. Its been a little shy to bear, but when picked at the right time its refreshing, and importantly my wife likes it and doesn’t think its sour - everything above she considers sour. So I’ll probably try it on its own tree, maybe a different rootstock/location and I can get it bearing?

Flavor Queen still hasn’t set fruit for me, but the tree is very small.

Hello Vincent, I am located north of point Robert WA. Dapple dandy is doing great in here. I have about 15-18 fruits, my friends graft has about 30 fruits. We still haven’t tried them yet.

Tried one today, definitely not fully ripe yet. Flavor is complex, meat is sweet, skin is tart, for some reason I taste savoury… I hope I am not going crazy haha. I will definitely wait for a week or two more. I am still very excited!

Very good looking fruit. You did an excellent job in Dapple Dandy Sean. Thank you so much for the report. So many times nurseries selling a big trees unfortunately I hadn’t planted it yet. I so careful about pluot until read good reports. I just picked all Vincent cherry plum in they are small fruit and about a couple weeks behind,Tasting also a little more tart than sweet treat because they’re not fully ripe yet. Super crispy and sweet and tart complex flavor. We like them very much Sean. @tutti-frutti

It’s lucky our fruits look ok after a couple rainy day. They might split later. My sweet treat ok. I will check on plum and fig tomorrow. Your splash not turn to red yet. Do not pick them until turn deep red. It will has more fruit next year.

Yeah, splash is not turn red yet, that’s why I think my sweet treat is not ripe even though is fully red, the skin is really sour for my taste. Yeah… after last night rain, my Asian pear and splash split…

I was searching on here to see if anyone else finds Flavor King odd tasting. I can’t put my finger on it, but flowery is one word I would use. It’s unlike any other plum or hybrid I’ve tasted. I eat one each season and then confirm I don’t like it…I give it away. I might graft over it.

Sweet Treat Pluerry is amazing. No cherry, but hangs forever, stays firm, skin isn’t sour, and prolific.

I find flavor king a little odd tasting until it is actually ripe. Once it is ripe, it is my favorite plum.
