Growing pluot in zone 8b PNW

Today is August 27, gave it another try at the dapple dandy. Flavour is top notch way better than the store! Sugar is a lot higher than 3 weeks ago. I think this beats my sweet treat. Flavor is very complex. We like it a lot, it’s a keeper. Flesh is meaty but yet very juicy!

Sorry guys got too busy to update on the taste of flavour king. I tasted it on September 15, it’s super sweet and juicy with a tropical flavour almost like pineapple or mango. But, flavour is not as intense as dapple dandy. It’s lacking acidity and crunchiness imo. Only had 4 fruits definitely is one of the least productive plout from the collection I have. Not sure if it’s worth to keep it… I also left the dapple dandy to hang a few weeks so that I can compare both plout bite by bite, I think dapple dandy is a winner. That’s purely my own opinion. I finally tasted Adara this year. Vincent, you are diplomatic  They are not good for eating.

But I also am happy to have them for pollen, and for interstem for mixing stonefruit on one tree.

BTW, did you get Dapple Dandy? I’ve only had it from the grocery store, which now that I think about it, is not a fair way to judge. I’ll probably be looking for scion wood this winter.

@murky i got dd from restoring eden

Adara Plum leaf and fruit look beautiful. Where you get it from? I was not recommended to everyone about its fruit quality.
Flavor grenade pluot from store quality just ok. Fortunately my home grown Flavor Grenade quality is extremely good. So I am wondering about dapple dandy quality? And its ripening time? @murky

For someplace I’ve never been, I really love that place.

That’s my thinking too Vincent. I’ve been unimpressed by store-bought Dapple Dandy, but then I realize that the Flavor King and Flavor Grenade from the store aren’t great either. A nice thing about Grenade is that it hangs for a really long time at good quality.

I don’t mean to sound ungracious about the Adara. I got it from a couple of sources and I’m very happy to have it. I just didn’t care for the fruit enough to pick them this first year I got some.

Just updated my Flavor Grenade pluot from last year. Was picked on 8/19/2025. Tasting excellent , a lot better quality than store fruit. I really like to plant the 2nd tree unfortunately no more room. Hopefully it’s also fruiting well this year. Below my flavor grenade last August.

For the tip of Dapple dandy pluot from @tutti-frutti thank you so much Sean. I finally got the tree today 4.18.26. Will keep updating.

Your Flavor Grenade look really great. I had just one small runted branch on my multi-grafted tree, so I grafted a second one onto Hollywood as a rootstock.

Above picture is my new tree Dapple dandy. My flavor grenade in bloom now and I think it grows Slower than the others stone fruit trees. Below is my flavor grenade in bloom this year.

Yeah, it seems to not be a super vigorous variety. I’m glad to have it on its own tree so it doesn’t have to compete.

I grafted Dapple Dandy to Krymsk 1 last Spring and it grew to 9’ whip in a single season. With a 4’ side shoot I took off in late Summer. (I just let the trees go for a bit with temporary new growth as animal/pest insurance.) Cut it back to 3’ (RIP several flower buds) and transplanted it two days ago next to my FG. FG seems to grow slightly faster than FQ, but significantly slower than Shiro.

My sugar twist is not looking good, I don’t see any fruitlet. Wondering if anyone try in our area ? I got the sugar twist after watching his video, my understanding is that he live fair close to where I live. But his fruit does not looks like sugar twist at all

Could be wrong, but none of my early blooming plums (or crosses) at this point look like they were pollinated. The weather was just too cool/wet when most were in peak bloom. Luckily I have lots of other trees that aren’t blooming yet, like my Euro plums, apples, and pears. Hopefully the later blooming trees will find some warmer/drier weather for the insects to get the job done.

My Oriental plums and Dapple Dandy pluot had the same weather and look the same. But what might be a worse problem is that I’ve seen hardly any bees since it warmed up during the last week. I saw more bees when the trees bloomed a month ago. I hope that the bees didn’t starve during the weeks of cool, wet weather that followed the early blooming.

Actually saw my first bee in the garden today. Finally a nice sunny warm day without any wind. There’s been quite a few sunny days lately, but they were either pretty cold or windy. Either way, that pretty much kept the pollinating insects tucked away and out of the air.

I looked really closely at some of my plum/cross/interspecific trees today. It looked like some of the trees had fruitlets forming, but they could all drop come June. One tree that surprised me was a new flavor grenade tree that I only planted in Oct last year. FG looked to have some fruitlets on it which really surprised me as I wasn’t expecting anything for a year or two.

So there may be some hope for the early blooming trees. Shiro seemed to have quite a few fruitlets, so fingers crossed.

The only trees that I see fruitlet is my splash plout and sweet treat Pluerry. Unfortunately my graft on flavor Granade failed two years in a row. I got the scions just waiting for the weather to hit 70 during the day. My newly grafted Nadia put up with a lot of flowers but have not seen any fruitlets on them yet.
