Hatching Ayem Cemani chickens for orchard patrol

The grasshoppers this year will have predators they can’t anticipate having. They will also be used to clean up falling mulberries, old garden wates etc. . My chickens have always been free range. These are Ayem Cemani. I borrowed @39thparallel Incubator.

Thanks @mrsg47. They are not only considered the most expensive chicken in the world they are good birds for free range. Every animal mistakes them for the greatly feared crows. Nothing likes to eat crow.

What color are the eggs?

Goggle says

Ayam Cemani chickens lay small to medium-sized eggs that are cream, tinted, or sometimes have a slight pinkish hue. Despite the bird being entirely black due to hyperpigmentation (fibromelanosis), the eggs are not black. They are light-colored, often described as cream, off-white, or tan, and the hens are low-production layers.

Were you able to get your stock from different sources, to establish genetic diversity, or are you not concerned about inbreeding them?

Clark just need to cross them with some Black Copper Marans:slightly_smiling_face:.

Tell that to the foxes that ate mine. Happened twice about 5 years apart.

that would make some interesting birds.

Some cool crosses can be made with these. I will gift this bunch of chickens to a friend later. They sell for a lot of money but I just like doing cool stuff like this.

yesterday morning i went to feed the birds and collect eggs like i always do. i collected from the 1st laying box then went to the 2nd which i thought had a hen facing backwards. then i realized i was looking at fur not feathers. there was a yearling raccoon curled up in the nest box. he got in there, ate some feed from the bag then decided to take a nap. never touched the birds. sadly there was no way to safety catch and relese him and i couldnt just leave him in with my birds so i had to put him down. ive never seen a coon this time of year. he must have lost his hibernation spot. i felt bad putiing him down but i couldnt take the chance leaving him in there. poor guy.
