I don’t know if this is the appropriate place to post this. I have tried to key out this tree, but two different sites keyed it as a dogwood, and I don’t think that is correct. Flowers are about 1/4" in diameter, pale yellow and inconspicuous. blooms early spring but after the bush leaves out.

image search indicates it may be Frangula caroliniana , commonly called the Carolina buckthorn

It looks similar to the alder buckthorn, frangula alnus , that I have in my garden, so I’d agree it’s a type of buckthorn.

I have some Carolina buckthorn here…
The berries eventually turn almost black and soften. I saw a guy on youtube saying they are edible but do not taste good. I tried a few and he was right… they are quite bland with a mild soapy flavor.

Thanks, pretty sure you all have it identified. Mine doesn’t have that many berries but it is in complete full shade.
