Here are some more obscure apple varieties with my wife’s favorite fall color, firey orange red. Also add in Cox Orange Pippin, Kidd’s Orange Red, Westfield Seek No Further that we grow also but those are bit more well known.
These have all ripened and come and gone for this season but we had a great year and look forward to next season.
Flaskeaeble (Prinzenapfel) - Germany, 1795. Name translates as “Apple of the Prince”. long shape, orange red in color with rich dense aromatic flesh that ripens early October.
Pixie - England, 1947. Small to medium sized fruit have reddish orange skin, thought to be a Cox’s orange seedling or Sunset seedling. Very aromatic, with plenty of sugar and acidity, exceptional, must be thinned. Not the same as Pixie Crunch which is a modern variety.
Schweizer Orangenapfel - Switzerland, 1935. Large to very large reddish orange fruit have firm, creamy white flesh with a subacid flavor.
