Which honeyberry varieties have the smallest leaf size? I noticed that my Keiko, which has small leaves, seemed to handle the heat and drought this summer alot better than the others with their long broad leaves. Could have just been a fluke of the irrigation system or just a good spot, but I’m kinda curious about it and was looking to get more late blooming honeyberry varieties this fall.
Of the varieties I have seen, Taka by Maxine Thompon has the smallest leaves.
Have no impression if it relates to anything so far.
Taka and Tundra have the smallest leaves in my plot.
I would look closer at where they got their genes from. Here in Alaska you want them with as much Siberian genes as possible for cold hardiness. This also makes them late croppers and I would suspect less heat resistant.
I could be mistaken, but I understand all are hardy in zone 3 and several/many in zone 2, and a number of them in zone 1.
Here in 6b the Indigo series defoliated for 6 weeks, but the winter killed them.
Currently none of my 30+ honeyberry plants are defoliated. I guess if we have 5 days in a row in the 90’s this week, that will be the test. But, I don’t expect to lose any this summer or coming winter unless it be a couple of rooted cuttings.
