How frost sensitive are potatoes, really?

My potatoes are just emerging. See below.

Low tonight is forecast in the mid-30s. NWS says “scattered frost, especially in the Shenandoah Valley” (we are not in the SV, we are in central MD), but no frost advisory or freeze warning has been issued.

My garden is low lying but has not been particularly frost prone. Last May we had light frost on the 9th with a 36F air temp, and my potatoes had no damage, even the tomatoes were fine.

Regardless, air temps tonight, almost certainly will remain a few degrees above freezing. We should have clear skies, but have at least a 10-15 mph breeze as well.

Jus wondering if I should cover them.

I would, at least loosely. if you have just few - buckets will work. Or throw a tarp over. Or just hill them over. I did it twice this year - they still going fine.

Frost will bite the leaves substantially. They usually come back out but you will loose time. I would just rake soil over them…I do that sometimes anyway just to get another layer of dirt for potato growth.

We used to grow them commercially and planted 45 days beforeast average freeze date. They are tough.

Note that major growing areas include the Klamath Basin, and regions in Colorado and Idaho, all having common late and early frosts.
