@EliindaUP… we usually have a warm up early March… (not always this warm) … then my plums bloom and set fruit.. then we get a hard frost.. late March or early April .. and they all drop.
Happened the last 3 years.
From past experience about 1 out of 10 years we have a plum harvest.
Hope for your sake it is! Late frosts are not productive or helpful. I have noticed our weather patterns in spring often closely copy the weather a lot of people further south post about, albeit with a 2 months lag or so. At least it seems that way to me.
I feel like a scrooge hoping for a few more weeks of winter in March to keep the trees from blooming a little bit longer. Less time to sweat out the threat of cold weather. We aren’t out of the woods on hard freeze until early May here.
Not this year though, spring has come right on schedule, the crocuses are blooming and the red winged blackbirds are back in the marsh.
My trees have been confused! In January half of my trees were budding, then two weeks of cold weather with several days in the 20’s, then 80’s in February! I missed any opportunities for dormant oil, no idea when I can spray anything. I am actually fine with some of my trees getting the flowers frozen off, however, I am not sure what I am doing next. I am going to prune soon, I know it is late, and I really am more concerned about shaping young trees than anything else at the moment.
why i like our snowpack come spring. keeps everything nice and dormant until it melts in early may. it greens up super fast after that. it still amazes me at 55 how fast everything grows at that time. fist the bushes then the trees are fully leafed out in about 10 days.
I am located almost directly north of you in zone 8B I know last couple of years I keep saying well wait till next year. There’s always that late frost that drops everything and then I had a tornado middle of March last year. The only good news this year is the few days of cold weather seemed to really delay my blossom on everything except a couple of apple trees. They opened up early, but it really doesn’t look like it affected them. I guess we’ll find out in a couple couple weeks to see if they set.
Supposed to get a few more inches of snow and ice tomorrow. But then high temps in the 70s!!! I can’t believe how fast spring has arrived. I’m not ready. And then after weeks in the 70s we’ll get a nice late freeze…
the difference between day and night is swingy. every day has been in the 50s no matter what the forecast says, it was to be in the low 40s today but was 53. every night, between freeze and frost. 30s
Well, there’s something to be said for @steveb4’s weather being predictable. I’m never wondering if it’s cold where he is. I’m only wondering how cold it is… (But mostly, I agree with you).
going to hit a balmy 39 tom. then back in the freezer in the 20’s till the weekend. it will thaw out just enough to turn the parking lots into a skating rink then refreezing. i have my left knee that still hurts when i bend it from a wipe out on a icy driveway a few winters ago. never got it checked but it still works so theres that.
