So that storm made it to Minneapolis overnight and part of the cloud deck blew thru this morning about 9am here in La Crosse (no rain). I was wondering if the rain would hold together and it did make it to Iowa before dying out. Looks like another repeat tonite.
Extended looks brutally hot out in N/South Dakota. 100Fs for a few days. Might sneak into W Minnesota for a day or 2.

105F today !07F tomorrow. Next week its 10 degrees cooler. Then I leave for Italy where its 20 degrees cooler!

Just humid here. With how saturated the soils are around this whole area i would imagine that will blunt the temps from getting too hot with the building ridge to the west but should keep humidity up.

More and more marine layer purgatory. We had a few hours of pure sunshine yesterday following a heavy dew dump of moisture and I thought it was finally over, but nope. What was June Gloom now feels like July Gloom.
i don’t believe it a bit. we are coming into the high desert summer now. maybe a thunderstorm later in the month but i don’t believe in rain right now

we are under a very rare severe weather warning for this afternoon into tonight. severe thunderstorms with strait line winds, hail and gust to 70mph possible as well as maybe a tornado. that would eliminate most of my fruit crop thats forming right now.

Looks like a big blob of clouds heading for Maine now. Riding around that huge heat dome over the US.
Hot. Models are looking better in breaking down this pattern. Could be talking about nights in the low 50Fs early next week. Much drier/cooler airmass. Just lock that in. This heat/humidity is brutal.

It’s basically perfect here today, slightly humid still…
But this is better than yesterday where it was nearly 78 degrees and just muggy by coastal California standards. I know it isn’t anywhere near as extreme as what others have been experiencing lately but we’ve definitely had a bit of random and unpredictable weather for July.

Thick smoke aloft today. Kept the high temp a good 10F under forecast. No complaints.

Wow what an amazing climate you have there. Could be a wet one this year out west with El Nino. Lots of monsoon moisture out west right now. Areas around Phoenix had some heavy rains yesterday.
Anywhere between 95F and 97F driving around town today. Everything is still very green from all that precip we had but starting to dry out. Mosquitoes are horrible in the evenings.

yep. that just hit us around 3pm. so bad you cant see 50 yrds. smells like a bbq out there. Quebecs a burnin’ , again. up until the last 7yrs ,it was rare we got smoke from thier fires, here. only happened a handful of times 40+ yrs before that. there was alot more woods and far less roads up there than there is now. i have a hard time believing the lumber companies would just stand by watching their profits go up in flames. Irving woodlands are one of the biggest and own the majority of northern Maines forests. they are very strict about fire use on their lands. so why are they letting these Canadian woods just burn?
Lots of storms around this ridge with the big heat into into the prairie provinces…”Ring of fire” type storms. They’ve been moving W to E up there and then diving SE around the ridge in QB and your area. Pretty good severe setup for us tonight.
But I think these storms are creating a lot of new fires. Unfortunately smoke particles aloft can contribute to more cloud to ground lightning as well so it’s a positive feedback mechanism right now.
As you know, occasional fires are a natural and beneficial occurrence in many forests…especially out west. People have been causing the majority of them in recent decades though. We’ve had some good smoke plumes make it in here in the past. I remember a really smoky couple of days in summer 2002. Lots of “yellow day” accounts in colonial times too.
Seems like we’ve been seeing more pig ridges in the central US in recent summers though. So we get into that NW flow which allows smoke to potentially advect in. The Bermuda High patterns give us SW flow and keeps cooler troughing in the upper plains. So there may be a little truth to a higher frequency of smoke days (sfc or aloft) in recent years.

100F for the next 4 days, then the heat wave, (called Canicule) is over for the summer. Then back to the normal 80’s through the rest of July and August.
We see the Canadair airplanes flying over the Rhone scooping up water to spray on the forests, land and mountains. . Much if the open fields in Provence are like kindling. Some jerk always manages to toss a cigarette out of his/her, car window and pouf! Within minutes a fire is born. This is the most brutal summer I have ever seen in July for the past 8 years. Off to Italy on Monday where it is cooler.

Managed to be lucky enough to see 1.75 inches of rain Monday after multi-week dry spell. Another heatwave is on the way and not much in the way of rain for the next couple weeks.
Are you going to Venice?
There are a ton of fires across Ontario and about a dozen across N Minnesota. I read they closed the BWCA. The smoke is going across the east and out into the Atlantic but if the winds turn north here it’ll get smokey.
