Just got a shipment of bare root strawberry mainly for my little grow tent / hydroponics experiment. I still have about half bag of strawberry plant left. Can I store them over the winter and so I can re-plant them in spring? I am in zone 7b. Due to space issue, plant them in ground is not an option for me.
Which one of the following is the best approach?
put them in refrigerator, keep them moist.
plant them in 4 inch containers, keep the soil moist and store them in a no light unheated garage.
got my bare root strawberries in from BRN on friday. i just have them in their bags on the cement basement floor in the dark. if im not ready to plant them in my hydro system, whats the best way to hold them over? it could be a week or more. i dont really want to temp plant them in dirt or another medium because hydro.
For a week keep them cool and damp. Don’t let them dry out. What you’re doing should work. But burying them in their bags outside might be better if that would be cooler. In the 30s would be good.
I like to remove all dead pieces on them, rinse them off really well then stick them in a ziplock bag with a wet paper towel and in the fridge they go!
This seems to be my best method so far for survival. I did this with all my roots this year cause I live too far from my family and friends to get help with my daughter while i go play in the soil. So it took me a while to get my stuff in pots as well. Just made my second garden bed and not even sure when I’ll be able to plant them where i want to right now but they’re happy so far.
ive only lost one crown, the biggest one, but it was moldy and in rough shape when i got it. their home should be ready within a week. i know this is all basic stuff but might be helpful to someone in the future
