Hi,
I live in northern New York near Watertown. I am hoping to have some success grafting Apple trees for my property. I currently have gala, honeycrisp, McIntosh, yellow delicious planted. They are newer trees and I guess I could take some scion cuttings from them. I would like some cold hardy, disease resistant varietals for cider making, eating and wildlife. Also a question for my experienced growers. I keep bees on my land. I know most apple trees require spraying. I am hesitant to spray because I don’t want to harm my hives. Anyone have any tips/advice? Any help appreciated, thanks
Besides dormant oil I dont think you need to really spray them until petals drop, shouldnt affect your bees too much hopefully. Im in ND and Ive grafted a bunch onto my trees. Shizuka is one of my favorites, but also pixie crunch, blondee, williams pride, honeygold, gravenstein, zestar and I know a few others that have skipped my mind right now. Actually I havent had a variety that ive grafted on fail due to climate yet, which amazes me.
Thanks! Any recommendations of where to order scions from? I ordered rootstock thru Cummins today. Snow is just melting up where I live. I didn’t want to order too early, but also don’t want to get them too late
Holleg,

Click on Scionwood Source
You can browse those sources, looking for what you want. If you plan to do spring grafting, it is quite late to order scionwood. Some places may already are closed.
You can order scionwood early and let them know when you would like them to ship it to you. Also, if they ship to you too early, you can keep scionwood in its package in a fridge for months.
