Intentional Runting of Pear Tree

If I intentionally runt out a pear tree -Blakes Pride on OH x F333- by letting it hold a full crop of pears at age 4, will the fruit also be runted or will it bear normal size fruit, assuming I thin properly?.

That may be hard to determine, I know I have read here that ohxf 333 itself may result in smaller fruit.

I’d say it depends on how much fruit you leave. I haven’t heard of pears runtting out like apples can. In apples it’s rootstock dependent. Pear rootstocks may not be dwarfing enough to permanently runt out. I say may because I don’t know.

I’m interested to hear the answer as well. I have an Orient pear that’s now 4th leaf, and isn’t more than 6ft tall. It has lots of blooms on it this year, and I was wondering if it’s allowed to set a lot of pears, will it runt out? The tree is on Callery rootstock.

I have a 3rd leaf Harrow Sweet on OHxF87 that’s even smaller and it has a few blooms on it as well. Should I pinch off those blooms?

Maybe @clarkinks could chime in? I asked him a similar question on another thread.

I have a 3rd leaf Alkmene apple on G11 that is about 6ft tall, but doesn’t have a lot of big scaffolds, and has lots of fruit buds about to open up. About how many fruit should it be allowed to set, if any?

My bet is you can’t runt them out. They may skip a crop but I think the tree will keep growing.

Its not easy to runt out a pear but i have done it. I have a harbin / communis cross of some type i put on callery about 10 years ago that is about 5 feet - seven feet tall so it dwarfed the tree by at least 20 feet. I have had problems with ohxf333 fruit being small but i attribute that to the root system not being fully developed. Clay soil, and fast fruiting. I would not think its permanent.
