Also known as, wood oats, inland sea oats and, my favorite, fish-on-a-fishing-pole.
I haven’t been growing it long but I think it is a really cool looking and interesting plant. One of those rare plants that has a native range of almost the entire continental US. This grass produces these pretty oat like stalks. It is shade tolerant and salt tolerant. Tolerates flooding and drought.
It is also edible, the seeds being used as a grain. If I can get enough of it going I’d like to experiment with different ways of eating it.

I’ve seen it growing on the creek bank on our farm here in southern KY.

I’ve seen them before around here, never realized they were perennial. The seeds(and husk) get in socks a lot.
Wonder if they’d hybridize with regular oats?
Have any of you eaten them?
I’m thinking about propagating a bunch of it to pant as a border asking some of my paths.
I think you’ll have great difficulty seperating the grain from the chaff and winnowing it.
