You have enough time to air layer now.

iād say you have plenty of time.
usually takes 2-6 weeks to root well.

My other layers were on the ground. What is the best method in the actual air? Plan to use a butter container with dirt, but worried about the dirt drying out in the container after I wrap it.

Butter container is fine but I prefer to use peat moss or any moisture control potting mix.

Potting soil with moisture control is what I was going to use. Just scratch the bark off a little as usual? I do not bother with the rooting stuff as I have just stabbed sticks in the ground with fair success.

It worked for me with or without rooting hormone so you are good.
