I am moving this and a couple other trees. While I’m doing that, I wanted to make a heading cut and hopefully encourage branches lower down (about the height of my index finger as shown). The trunk is about two inches in diameter. Is it too large now to safely make a heading cut that will heal properly?
I would cut just above a side branch cut.
There’s more promise of shoot growth there.
Also:
Make a sloping cut towards the sun, so that water will not stand in the cut.
What kind of a tree is that?
If that is a cherry tree I can tell you that cherry trees often die after transplants. Get a new tree and enjoy this one till the new one reaches size.
A tree at 2 inches diameter will not have enough feeder root close to the trunk. If you dig up a four foot ball there is not going to be enough of these roots. Why do you want to move it.
It’s a peach. It was planted bare root year before last.
Peach. The others Id like to move are plums. All are about the same size and age.
The area I had originally planned to have them is getting re adjusted. I’d like to move them to give them a better spot and a little more room.
The main problem with heading peaches low is they may not bud from the older wood. But you have some pruned shoots there and it should be able to bud from the bases of those shoots.
Moving should be fine, just dig up as many roots as you can.
I would be inclined to first take and store some healthy scions now before bud break from the healthiest limbs of the tree. Then top the tree about 6” to 1’ above your index finger, then relocate the tree getting as many roots as you can, then when you are prepared to top work the tree, re-cut the tree at your desired height and then use your scions to bark graft probably 4 scions around the freshly cut top. If you save enough scions, add several side grafts at a lower elevation to provide back up grafts to assure you get adequate number of new limbs. The tree will go thru shock, so all steps should be done avoiding any delay between each step.

Lots of fabulous advice here, thank you everyone! I hadn’t thought to take backup scions, but that’s a great idea!
