Jujube bark problems?

This is the bark if my Li jujube. This is the second season in ground. Last year it did not grow a lot but this year it put in quite a bit of growth.

Is it sun burn or something else? Is it normal?

I’m in middle Tennessee zone 7.

You can paint with dilute white latex paint 50/50 to protect from the sun.

Does that imply you think it might be sunburn? Is there still hope for the tree if I paint it after the damage?

I got a 9 years old Li with bark splitting every year but in my case the Li is not as cold tolerance as other jujube varieties. It finally died this early Spring. There are five rootstock suckers that spouted and I am planning to graft those to Massandra and more Vegas Booty.
