I found this study on Jujube flowering times and fertility from the University of New Mexico. It talks about bloom time of the flowers, self fertility, and fruit set. Its an interesting piece.
we found the cultivar ‘so’ aka ‘contorted’ to be self-fruitful(and we used N-95 masks as pollen-proof barrier, which is more reliable than any barrier since it will also stop wind-borne pollen), but the pits will be seedless or have deformed non-viable seeds.
but then again, quite likely to have more than one genotype of the cultivar ‘so’, since our open-pollinated trees produce pits with viable seeds, and some of its seedlings present with the unmistakeable contorted growth habit as well. We’ve used several vegas-bred ‘contorted’ seedlings(as rootstoc) that are just as twisty and kinked as the parents, and will try to get some of them to fruit. The one which might bear good-quality fruits gets dubbed ‘vegas kinky’.
We’re in the process of coming up with a vegas series of jujus. Already have ‘vegas booty’(which we surmise to have grown from sihong seed with sherwood as pollen-source), ‘vegas honey’(honey jar seedlings), and ‘vegas baby’(sweet-sour spinosa type which probably had hj as pollen source)
