Ladybug eggs or something else?

This afternoon I was thinning out a thicket of weeds and cherry plums to prepare for grafting to apricots. At the base of a group of saplings I noticed this cluster of orange balls. They reminded me of a documentary that I once watched about the ladybug. Would like to get a positive ID if anyone has studied this before.

I have seen the same thing at the base of weeds or almost into the soil a little. I have no idea what they are. Don’t looks like most slug eggs I’ve seen. I thought lady bugs generally lay their eggs on leaves and that they are more yellow and a little oblong.
I am anxious to find out also.
GREAT picture!

I think I figured it out. It is Leocarpus fragilis AKA Slime Mold.

Yuk!
Well now I don’t feel bad for destroying it.
