Hi Folks: does anyone know of a source for the Lars Anderson peach trees? (Fedco is sold out and we are expanding the orchard greatly this spring and would like to add this one.)
Also looking for Red Haven. Thanks for any ideas. We are in Maine Zone 5.
Grandpa’s Orchard has Redhaven. Fedco’s description makes Lars Anderson sound like it is a Maine heirloom that probably isn’t widely distributed. That one might be hard to find.
Redhaven makes its way to a lot of big-box stores here. So that would be an option for you.
Tractor Supply here in Maine have Red Haven for $12.99. They were actually decent looking but not sure what type of rootstock they are on.
Stark Bros. screwed me (sorry for the language) out of a large commercial Red Haven order that I had put a deposit on last fall. If not for me calling about a month ago…I wouldn’t even had known that they were not filling it. I was NOT impressed and will NEVER order from them again.
Tried to do an order through Grandpas but they could not do the quantity that I needed. They may have some Red Haven though. I also think that they might get some of their trees from Stark Bros(?).
Of course it’s pretty late for a tree order, but you might try Schlabach’s nursery. They don’t have an online site because they are Amish, but you can get their phone number off the internet and call.
As I recall, the last time I ordered from them (years ago) they carried Redhaven. They carry other somewhat cold tolerant varieties too. Nice folks.
You also might try another Amish nursery - White Oak nursery. I’ve not used them before, but @Matt_in_Maryland has recommended them.
Lars Anderson is the peach that has done the best for me in midcoast Maine (very coastal i.e. island) - where late peaches don’t ripen consistently for us. I have searched online for Lars Anderson and don’t see even much discussion beyond fedco and my blog; according to Fedco its origin was also coastal Maine. They do great work poking around old farms and surfacing local varieties that are growing well here; occasionally it seems the broader exposure allows a local specimen to be identified as an obscure old variety known elsewhere by another name, so I suppose it’s possible that could be the case with Lars - or maybe it was a chance seedling.
I suspect Fedco or Delton Curtis would be happy to do a custom order of Lars Anderson; Delton’s got a pretty cool orchard up in Thorndike where he taught a MOFGA bud grafting class I took a few years back - some notes here: Bud grafting class at Curtis Pond Nursery | Five Islands Orchard
That’s right. I couldn’t quite recall my conversation with the lady at Grandpas who was very nice and actually did mention Mosher. She contacted someone at Mosher and then left a VM that they could not fulfill the order which was understandable considering the late date of my request.
I’ve had just 2 trees from Stark Bros and had to dig up and throw away both after a couple of years. I’ll keep looking for a Maine grower of Lars Anderson. Thank you
Delton is one of the growers Fedco uses; he has a really nice farm up in Thorndike or thereabouts where he produces a lot of nursery stock for them. Here’s a brief bio: Profiles - Fedco Trees
How many do you need, and where are you located? I may have budded a couple last summer, but won’t know until the snow melts!
And to be clear I’m not in the business, but would be happy to help out if it gets you started a year sooner. Buy a bundle of plum rootstocks at the Fedco sale, take the MOFGA bud grafting class in midsummer (Curtis used to teach it), and you can have a whole row of them next summer!
