Listing all golden yellow kiwi cultivars / types / sorts

No such thing anywhere. Atleast to the best of my knowledge or most kiwi enthusiasts I know.

Some yellow kiwi have fuzzless skin that is smoothish, but definitely not edible skin like a hardy kiwi.

I’ve got tons of gold seedlings going this year. Really odd no one sells them, I’d have rather short cut the fruiting wait. I guess this way I can clone and distribute them later without issue.

??

I guess what I’m asking about is whatever they sell at Costco in the golden kiwi box — Zespri sungold. I eat those without peeling them, skin and all, and I don’t detect any hair on them.

I would still consider them to be fuzzy. Yes, all the varieties have less fuzz than Deliciosa. But far more than the smooth skinned ones that have actually edible skin.

:sob::sob: rwseeds is one of the biggest seed scammers on Etsy. For anything more than uncommon items, if they do germinate, i can bet my life that it won’t be the variety they’re advertising. On top of that, even the common items from them are not true to variety. I bought from them many many many moons ago and it turned out to be lettuce seeds. I didn’t know any better at the time but i was going for other fruits… I’ve found a LOT of seed sellers on Etsy to be either resellers or scammers. Especially the ones for uncommon varieties. Not saying there aren’t any legit people on there because i have gotten legit rare variety seeds from a lot of US sellers on there however, the majority of sellers on there for seeds are not decent human beings.

Also rwseeds sells a lot of fake seeds too in the past. Not sure if they’re still doing it or not but such things as “rainbow” photoshopped grapes or blue strawberries

There is plenty of interest in yellow kiwi’s here. Is it a novelty or are they somehow better then green kiwi?
The only yellow I tasted was from Costco it that batch was inferior to green in taste.

Was it a Zespri gold kiwi or one of the imitators?

I personally prefer the Zespri gold in taste (and because the skins are functionally hairless and you can just eat them whole like an apple).

My understanding is that the Zespri golds are all patented and the original golden fruit in China are not exported.

Hey vitog, im in the Lower Mainland and cant find yellow kiwi anywhere. Can you tell me where you found yours please?

I got mine from Phoenix Perennials in Richmond, in 2021. It was part of their pre-orders. I don’t think that I’ve seen it offered since then, but I haven’t been looking for it. You could talk to them to find out if they will be offering it again.

The only problem with it is that it blooms earlier than the green kiwi male that I have; so, only the late blooming flowers are getting pollinated. However, it produced so many flowers this year that the vine would not be able to ripen the crop if all of the flowers got pollinated. Pollination is going on right now, and I’ll soon find out how much of a crop it will produce with natural pollination. Last year 7 of 11 flowers produced fruit, but I hand-pollinated them.

Hi Vitog, my yellow queen kiwi died, any chance I can buy some cuttings from you? I’m also in Vancouver.

Hi, Rooftop. I will be pruning my vine after harvesting, probably in November. However, I’ve tried rooting fall cuttings of golden kiwi vines and had no success. If you want to try, you’re welcome to the material that will be removed.

I’ve read that softwood cuttings work better for kiwis; so, if you are interested, I have some green shoots that could provide you with cutting material right now.

There may be other options as well. If you want to discuss it further, we should probably use the personal message option in this website (Messages in menu at left).

Green softwood shoots are fine. I will be trying it out grafting. I can’t private message, I’m new to the forum. Are you able to start the personal message?

Or email will work too.

I have the same queen yellow kiwi but it ended up producing male flowers only not sure if this is normal. However I a yellow variety that I got from petal from the past back in 2011, they called this “sunshine” for female and “tiger” for the male. Unfortunately tiger died. Could not find replacement for several years so I bought a fuzzy male “Tommy” correct me if I am wrong. I harvested few hundreds of kiwi due to rats are eating them. Interesting enough, fruits are yellow and some are green. Flavor is okay. It’s sweet with a tart note. Is a bit slimy not sure if it’s from the hardy kiwi flowers that I have ? On cons is that the center part is pretty big and a bit crunchy.

Yellow meat kiwi: G3, G9, Jinshi N4(New金实4号猕猴桃), Golden(早黄金猕猴桃), Jinyi(金义猕猴桃), Jinyan(金艳猕猴桃), Jinmei(金梅猕猴桃), Jinnong N2(金农2号猕猴桃)

Golden Dragon - Jinnong

Ripens on the vine even in short season climate like Seattle. It is even earlier than most hardy kiwis and gets very sweet.

Keep in mind that kiwi fruits ripen well after being picked under-ripe. I assume that the yellow/golden kiwi fruits are green inside when under-ripe and yellow when ripe. I haven’t cut any of my yellow kiwis open until they’ve turned soft and ripe; and they have all been yellow. Your green ones are probably not ripe enough to develop the yellow color yet. Commercial kiwis are normally picked under-ripe because they can be transported more easily and can be stored longer.

So, wait until they get soft to eat them, and they should taste nice and sweet, with yellow flesh.

‘AU Golden Sunshine’ is known as ‘Jinyang’ in China and is tetraploid. I still have one, but it has not bloomed except when I first got it when it was in a pot. I have it on it’s own roots in ground now (ground layered it), but it keeps getting knocked back by cold. The male that AU offered, Golden Tiger was a 5X fuzzy/yellow hybrid that was not hardy at all. I now have two male seedlings from Sungold fruit that have survived unscathed after -8F that killed Golden Sunshine to the ground. These are tets that should bloom with Golden Sunshine if it will ever get better established without dying back.

I agree that your Golden Sunshine fruit look right, but are not fully ripe, which is probably why they are greenish. The fuzzy male you got would be Tomuri. Probably too late for GS in most climates but would probably work in PNW type climates.

Your Sunshine variety is surely AU Golden Sunshine. I have an 8 year old vine of Sunshine and Tiger (the male). I have eaten hundreds of the fruits of Golden Sunshine. At my location in AL, they are not nearly as yellow or as sweet at the Zespri variety from the grocery. They are decent flavored but not good enough to get me very excited. The really green ones in your photo are probably not totally ripe as others have said, but they will never get fully yellow and delicious like the store bought ones. I pick all of mine when I see the first few drop on the ground. At that point about 95% of them are firm ripe and will fully ripen slowly over a few weeks in the fridge. The ones that soften on the vine taste past their prime to me. They are a lot better if ripened slowly in the fridge. I’ve been thinning to two fruits per shoot and still have a massive crop. Next year I am going to try one fruit per shoot to see if that improves the quality. I also have grafted about 15-20 zespri seedlings on my sunshine vine so I hope they will try to flower next spring.
