Okay, cool. Your experience is like mine, except I haven’t had the good ones you did that year. Keep me in mind. I want to know if its my taste, or just the apples I’ve tried.
I had a similar situation with Calville Blanc and decided it was my palate for that one.
First Lucy Glo from my own trees! I picked this one because it had some damage near the stem -maybe that hastened it’s ripening? Considering they hit the shops in October I wouldn’t expect them to develop so early here in Northern California but no clue. Not ripe but still absolutely delicious, and not far away. Color is stunning, has that strong raspberry lemonade note that a lot of red-fleshed apples do. I’d rather eat these unripe than anything in the store currently. I have 3 more apples on this little tree (dwarf, planted 2024) that hopefully will hang a bit longer. The dwarf tree I have in a pot is growing several apples too but they’re quite stunted in comparison - not sure I’ll get to taste any of them this year. I love this apple so it and Gem are the only thing I grafted this year - I have a field graft on MM111 and a lot more in my nursery bed. Glad I got to taste this one because it indicates that LG is going to be fantastic in my climate.
I had four on my tree, the squirrels helpfully destroyed all of them. Damage probably hastened its ripening. I’d think they ripen around September in CA? ACN says they ripen a few days earlier than Honeycrisp, so a few days earlier than whenever that would be in your climate.
The two last survivors on my in-ground Bud9 tree fell down last night. They look to have reached full size but I was waiting to see if they got some more color. Tried the first one today. Wow.
Extra crisp texture. Low acid, less tart than most grocery store ones I’ve had before, but still balanced. Very sweet, with a raspberry bubblegum floral flavor. A fantastic apple.
Not in the Midwest… although that probably isn’t saying much.
I know this is a thread on the Lucy Glo, but does anyone have any experience with the Lucy Rose? I planted a whip last year and am curious if it’s going to be worth keeping or not.
The Lucy Glos from the store have been consistently great for me, the Lucy Rose was a dud two years ago (just kind of meh), but pretty good last year (lightly sweet, juicy and berry-y). I prefer the higher acidity of Glo though personally. I could see people who like Fuji/Gala/Honeycrisp just simple, straight-sweet apples really enjoying a good Lucy Rose.
Yeah, the Rose I have had have been hit or miss, but such is the case with most supermarket apples.
Lucy Glo is usually outstanding, and the only ones that weren’t great seemed like a storage issue. It seems to not really be a keeper and it bruises easily.
Our local Safeway had high quality Lucy Glo apples. $4/lb works out to $2/apple.
There wasn’t a shelf label, and the stylized sticker is difficult to read. But I recognized them as Lucy Glo from far away, and having Lucy Rose above them was a give away.
good to know theyre rolling in. I know in past years trader joe’s had them. I asked if theyd be getting them in last week and said “they wouldnt be able to order them for a long time” for my local one. The hunt continues…
I’m looking for a Lucy Glo bare root tree for next spring…it seems my two options are Gurney’s for $70 (smaller and the risk of cancellation) or Restoring Eden for $132 (bigger and more reliable but shipping is more than the tree). One Green World isn’t offering them this next season.
Theyre all out of stock right now. Didnt even know restoring eden got them back. I ended up placing an order at gurneys for glo. I also have a lucy gem coming in of which there are 0 reviews.
