Who has Black Ice Plum? What are your experiences with it in terms of disease resistance and pollination? Is anyone growing it in a hot and / or humid climate?
I was going to aquire black ice plum but reading the existing threads here changed my mind.
I have it here in west central MN with no disease issues to date, but I don’t have much in the way of disease issues on much of anything at this time. We can be humid but not normally too hot llike much of the south. Its a great plum for my area ripening earliest of the varieties that I have but doesn’t last long and turns to a mushy, juicy mess soon after peak ripeness.
Cool! For comparison what other varieties do you have? If it’s earlier than Methley, that would be very interesting.
I’m growing it in middle TN, zone 7b.
Actually I made a few trees for MN and one never got dug and fruitrd last year. It was a great plum. No disease, no cracking, large size, excellent flavor. I wasn’t expecting much since it is a zone 3 plum. I belive it was late June or early July when they ripened. This is only their first year. Maybe i was lucky.
Here in coastal RI (Z7A), I’ve had repeated strikes of Black Knot.
In this area, there is a huge population of wild black cherry, which serves as a reservoir for black knot. It is therefore almost impossible to grow Asian plums and sweet cherries. Ditto European plums except the most resistant varieties.
I am trying to grow resistant Europeans (President, Empress, Bluebyrd) and hybrids (Alderman, LaCrescent, Toka, Black Ice). But given my experience with BK, I am top-working Black Ice to other varieties.
I have Black Ice, Toka, Superior, Mt Royal, Percy’s, Waneta and La Crescent and probably a couple others I’m not remembering at this time
Hello all. I have two Black Ice trees, and Five Toka. My experience in my region with Black Ice has been excellent. The trees i have, grow about ten foot high, so havent had to prune. Set relient crops, pest free, and i have blossom blight in the Toka, which i have to spray for, but Black Ice never has aquired the disease. Excellent care free tree in my area. Only thing i would say is the fruit is what you would expect a plum to taste like. No huge pleasant surprise. But, dependable, and carefree in my area. Plant and harvest. ))
