My French wife introduced me to Mache (lamb’s lettuce) which is now sold at French markets and grocery stores. It is a delightful soft green for salads.
Very easy to grow from seed, too!
It is so good. It hasn’t been in our markets yet this year. It is more of a late summer fall crop here. Sooooo good!
I grow them every year but somehow I don’t get a lot.
It is very common in Europe but hard to find here. I tried to grow it myself without much success.
Try growing it as a winter crop. I have sown it in October and it will grow under frost cloth all winter long.
Do you use big seeds or small seeds mache for the winter? I tried early spring sow, only one or two came up from a pack of seeds and soon overtook by the weeds.
I sow mine in the fall, and only a few came up.
It’s called Valeriana in Italy. I’ve planted seeds in the Spring and it grows easily. It’s common here so I don’t grow it much
Not sure what you mean by big or small seed, but my current pack of seeds is from fedco.
