Marigold behemoths

Has anyone grown 7’ marigolds before? My french marigold seeds from True leaf that were supposed to be under 12” are these insane giants that forest out and barely flower. I have been cutting them down left and right and chop and dropping them when I have time. But, I hadn’t tackled my mini orchard where they went insane. Aside from where they could grow up trees, they mostly flop, root along the stem and have densely carpeted this and other areas. I pulled one up and it was well over a foot over the 6’ fence! WHAT ARE THESE??! African marigolds? True leaf market gave me the worst, possibly AI response just saying, “I understand your curiosity regarding the specific variety. Unfortunately, it can be quite challenging to identify the exact type of marigolds based solely on their growth and appearance, especially when they do not match the expected characteristics from the seed packets.”

One would think it would be easy to identify 7’ marigolds. Sorry can’t judge height in the pictures because they’re all prostrate. I’m so worried about them reseeding though thankfully (?maybe?) there are few flowers. Just a marigold carpet. Not what you ever plant marigold for…I think I posted a picture a month ago in the Crimsoncrisp thread

I’ve got some that are pushing 5 feet tall. Mine are crackerjack marigolds.

I vote for the identification as African marigolds (Tagetes erecta). Thank you for the garden shot :slightly_smiling_face:.

Mine did the same one year, ended up being mislabeled seeds. The chop-and-drop is the right call though, they break down fast and the orchard floor is better for it.

I will try to get them all down this weekend. Need it cleared and decomposing in 6 wks for cover crops.

Some marigolds are day-length sensitive and will only flower when days are shorter than 12 hours. You get lots of vegetative growth instead of flowers. Now that the equinox has passed, you might start getting more flowers.
