Muscadine Experiment

After experimenting with dwarf apples for 8 years we declared the project a failure.

We plan to rework the apple trellis to support Muscadines and give them a try. We know they will be much easier to grow than apples in my climate but probably a lot harder to sell.

First batch of 50 goes in this weekend.

Well, with all the wineries in NC these days, maybe that would be the market for muscadines.

Good idea about the winery but we are mostly Pick Your Own fruit. Most of the families with young kids seem to be more interested in the picking experience rather than the apples so they may accept muscadines as a substitute since very few local fruits are available for picking in September.

We have a new extension specialist who will be working with muscadines which could help too.

50! Very cool! Would love to see some pics of those once planted :+1:

Sounds like a great project. What varieties will you be trying?

I have Summit, Supreme, Sweet Jenny, Tara, Triumph and another I can’t remember.

Hope to add a few more varieties next year.
