My apricot tree looks strange

I purchased an apricot tree 3 or 4 years ago and planted in a pot. After the first winter it grew and even produce a small amount of fruits. But not sure how long after that the main trunk die but two branches came out from under the soil. I am pretty sure they are the same tree. However, the leaves that they produce look different then what I remember from the main trunk. And there has been no flower. This is the 2nd year it’s doing this. Could anyone tell if I still have an apricot tree or something weird had happened?

Hello Ling and welcome. The Apricot tree was grafted to a root stock.Probably a Peach type. So,there could be fruit produced,in the future and it may or not have good flavor.

Your apricot has been taken over by its Peach rootstock.

Welcome to the forum Ling.

Curious as a small container grown tree, would you guys just chop off the rootstock suckers or would it be better to graft a few other apricot varieties onto them?

As others have replied, those are definitely not apricot leaves. Apricot leaves are quite round with a pointed end.

I’d pick the biggest rootstock sucker, remover the rest, and graft the remaining one back to something you want to grow.

Good thing is you have a larger set of roots to support rapid growth.

Ling indicated that it’s been about two years,in the present condition. So,the Apricot is very likely gone.
Grafting Apricot,Plum or Plumcot/Pluot is my choice with something like that.

I am surprised to see so many replies right away. Thanks so much for the explanations and advice. I would not have thought of it being a grafted tree, the new grows are from the root stock. I am totally new to grafting. I do have a couple other small plum trees and a different type of apricot tree which all have started to bloom. Would it be too late to get scions form those trees?
