My Indoor Fruit collection and my rating for each

I’ve been collecting for only 4 years but have over a hundred varieties and species most indoors some in my small greenhouse and some temperate outside but this topic is focused on my indoor fruits. I will be listing my fruits and the rating out of ten. ( not all of them just my most successful)

So first my favorite Is any Passiflora species or var. i have 4 already, two edulis a Fredrick i think and a red rover, then i have a couple mystery Passiflora (i put a bunch of Passiflora seeds in a pot and don’t know what’s what) and a passiflora vitiflolia. Passiflora is a vine so they can be compact and doesn’t need to much care. my only problem is that they only fruit once a year (for me i heard about other people getting multiple). I wish I had infinite because of how good they are. They also fruit quickly, like figs they root easily maybe even easier then figs.it is a 9.5/10 for taste, a 8.2/10 for how easy it is to grow, a 9/10 for looks id rate it a 9/10 for general

one of my favorites is Dwarf Acai. I’ve had mine for 2.5-3 years now. People never talk about indoor acai but it has been the easiest plant to grow for me. It is slow growing but its supposed to fruit in as little as 4 years from seed. I have not been able to try it yet so i guess it could be better or worse. like i said i haven’t tasted it but from acai bowls and videos of people rating the fruit the taste is probably a 7/10 but you could use it for a ton of dishes. for me its is easier then anything so a 10/10 for how easy it is to grow, a 8.3 out of ten for looks and id rate it a 8.8/10 general. It is also just really cool to have.

Jamaican cherries are next I’ve had this one for about 9 months. This is what inspired this post, from DeadBoy’s post about Muntingia Calabura (Jamaican cherry) These love to drop and replace there leaves a lot so you’ll have to clean below it on the floor tons. But it makes berries constantly that’s a big plus for me because i am impatient and want ripe fruit all the time. It is a little hard to grow maybe a 7.8/10 its taste is a 8.6/10 looks I love the look of the leaves 8.7/10 and general probably a 8.5.

My oldest plant i have is my cocoa tree or Theobroma Cocoa. it is 5 years old now no fruit yet :frowning: but I’ve had many pods imported from Puerto Rico. You do need two plants or you could graft it and cross pollinate it on the same tree (what I’m going to do) Like the Jamaican cherry it is a little hard to grow but once you get the hang of its requirements its easy probably a 7.8/10, its taste for me is like walking into the amazon 9.3/10. the look of it when its healthy is a 9.3/10, general its a 8.9/10

My newest success is my starfruit. It is at least 3 years old but probably older and i think its grafted. This is another one that drops leaves a lot. It seems to grow constantly even indoors (usually fruits stop growing during the winter and start again in the summer). Its easy to grow like a house plant just water when the top dries its a 8.6/10 for how easy it is to grow, the taste is probably a 9/10 depends on the variety, it looks very good has pink flowers and pink/red new growth about a 8.8/10 and general its a 8.7/10.

I’ve been thinking and typing for a long time and should go to bed let me know if you like this and if i should make more. I do have lots of other fruits. also let me know what you have or your thoughts on my ratings.

This is great. Can you say more about your starfruit? How are you caring for it? I got a Kari in the fall and it dropped leaves like a boss, all the branches that defoliated fell off or I pruned off because they scratched brown. But, stabilized and then started growing like crazy with new branches, flowering, AND dropping leaves from older branches. I’m a bit baffled by this plant. Also, I can’t manage to get the leaves a nice green.

One more question- did you grow your dwarf açaí from seed?

Would love to see some pictures

Thanks, @Mrjc, for very interesting information! In your experience, does passion fruit have high humidity requirement? I tried to grow some carnivorous plants but failed because I couldn’t maintain the required humidity in winter. (We do have a whole house humidifier, but you can’t keep the humidity too high because of condensation.)

What is your light situation, windows, LED? Any pest issues like spider mites?

Nice writeup.!

The passion fruit has no problem at all with low humidity, it has no humidifier. i do have a room with a humidifier but it is not in that room. i do watch out for condensation and mold and i try to keep it dry enough so no mold will grow.

i have LEDs tons of them but some plants are just by a window like my cocoa. Others like Jamaican cherry need natural light and a strong LED. I have had spider mites on a passion fruit but after a couple sprays they went away. mealy bugs are the real problem for me but i can at least minimize them with sprays and medical alcohol actually works the best for me.

Yeah my starfruit I actually have no idea what it is i got it in Florida outside a thrift store and drove it back up to Virginia. I don’t do much for it right now and i should probably care for it more I water it a couple times a week like 2-3 a week. I think it just likes to drop and replace leaves a lot. You probably need to fertilize it or your using to much fertilizer but i don’t know for sure that’s just usually the case for weird colored leaves. did you get fruit from it? The acai i bought from 9 waters on amazon i think. but it was probably like 2-3 months old now that i look back at how big it was.

Well, great to know it can become an easy plant. I got mine from Everglades farm.

How big is the dwarf açaí now? Any pictures?

How are you trellising your passionfruit inside?

I have a dwarf acai that i was planning to plant in ground but now i want to get a second to keep in a pot :-).

I know everyone is asking me for pictures it took me awhile to get to it. Here
