Name that apple

Does anyone recognize this apple variety
Each year I collect these from a roadside apple tree and I’m always amazed at its productivity and the condition of the fruit for a tree completely neglected

Could be Calville Blanc de Hiver - in which case it’s a real keeper.

Hi Mark,
Your suggestion has 5 dimples, these have 10 dimples so it’s a bit unique.
Thanks though, I taste tested one this morning and it’s quite tart yet so it needs a week or so more to fully ripen on the tree. I have grafted it to my own trees so in future I can grow it at home.

Sure thing Darrel,
I will put you on my list. Will do cutting late Feb early March. When I go to pick more in a week or so I will post a pic of the tree. It’s most likely a heritage tree from early settlers. This week I met one of the ladies in Auburn Historical society and she asked me to help save one of Ezra Meekers plantings that date back to 1890s. I was honored that she would ask me to help preserve this old tree.

Darrell, do you like the good varieties of apples?

I refer to the apples varieties, good “GOOD”.

Calvilles are are more round and a bit squat in shape. To me it looks like one of the Pearmains.

I love good apples Jose, but the key is that this apple appears to have very few pest/disease problems. I have several varieties grafted this past spring.

It does somewhat resemble the Worcester Pearmain in the both have some dimples, but this one is not going to be as red colored. I could be a cross with Pearmians. Its rather long slender shape is unusual. I suspect it’s an older variety cross with a later variety delicious variety.
Another couple pics

For the USA northern states, the interesting varieties are those of the “resistant” range.
apples of this type

  • Ladina
  • Story Inored

Etc…

The new “resistant” varieties, from the Czech Republic, are ideal for your climate.

Kandil Sinap is my guess, @DennisD But, if it’s a seedling, might well be RD x YD.

Coloration and shape for Kandl are close matches, will post another pic when mine is fully ripe

So far only Golden Dorset and your suggestion of Kandil Sinap are the closest match I have seen in fruit characteristics. I tasted Golden Dorset last trip to Oregon Hoid River valley orchards. Its taste is very similar but the fruit is more round and not as slender as this variety.

Somewhere I saw a photo of a long Yellow Bellflower. But, I don’t think that’s it.

I believe it is a Glockenapfel.

I expect that you are correct! It’s a spitting image of color, shape and size!
In a week or so mine will be in ripest color and I would like to compare with your tree, the foliage and the bearing characteristics. Thanks Mike

I checked again this am, fruit still a bit unripe but confirmed it’s a spur bearing variety that matches what I read online. Is your tree spur bearing?
