Went grocery shopping yesterday at a upscale store, The Fresh Market, saw mandarins at $3.95 a PIECE. Some of mine are much bigger, bought one to compare, guess what, mine taste better AND not as dry, grown in Arkansas, go figure! Pomelo’s at $6.95,Each, mine much bigger, had to laugh my…off walking out of the store, made my day. Maybe they want to buy my Smith figs at a dollar each.
Thinking about buying a new tractor or a fishing rig next year.
Dreaming? Must be.
My Pomelo’s are much bigger AND MUCH BETTER TASTING. Thin peel, just a little thicker than an orange. Besides seedless.
How many years did it take your Mandarins to start producing?
It all depends if you use sionwood from a producing tree, 3 years if you got your knowledge of growing citrus right. Fertilizer, media, p/h, etc.
Not all that hard, you got to make it grow first. I push my tree’s hard in the beginning.
I have 7 that I grew from seeds. They are about 3 to 4 feet tall now. They are about 2 years old.
I personally would graft varieties that you have access to. You can collect sionwood from some really fine varieties from forum members.
There are a huge variety of citrus to choose from, like apples, pears, you name it, would go that route. My collection started only 5 years ago, already at limit.
If you don’t know how to graft, you better get with the program as fast as you can.Live is short.
There are 100 different ways to graft, you only need 3 or 4.
From what I read the stuff you grow at home is much better tasting because the fruit is often times picked prematurely at for the store. Basically it is often times traveling thousands of miles at your store so they let it ripen when on the truck and getting on store shelves. Also it is pretty well known stores rip you off when it comes to price. Last week I went to the grocery store and bought cherries at Costco. I got something like 2 pounds for 13 dollars. You can buy a self pollinating cherry tree like stella for 20 something to 30 dollars and be eating way more than two pounds.
It’s called: convenience, coming from New Zeeland, Chilly, who knows. I only buy when they in season, than wait till next year.
