Out in the garden this evening and perhaps rashly cut Hudson’s Golden Gem down to the rootstock and grafted it over to Claygate Pearmain. Hudson’s did fruit for me, on a 3’ tree, I was delighted by the precocity but underwhelmed by the apple. They did crack at the crown as advertised for a juvenile tree but by that time it had cooled enough that they didn’t rot, just hohum. Don’t know if Claygate will be better but I had scion wood and just couldn’t see messing with a strange little tree with middling apples for another year.
