Very interesting hearing how a family fruit growing business just sort of happens. Using seeds no less! That didn’t last, but their business did. I found this interesting. Makes me want to do the same.
What an inspiring story! Are you growing Yuzu? I have a 3’ tree outside in a 25g pot. Even though temp hasn’t dipped below 28F so far, I have strung lights with a freeze plug that turns on at 35F. From what I’ve read, Yuzu can handle temps down to 20F… but I’m afraid to try it! What’s your experience?
We had 27.5 Friday night, that’s the coldest so far this winter. Forecast looks warmer next week. I have a Yuzu in ground and 2 Flying Dragon trifoliate rootstocks that I budded with yuzu last summer that I hope will grow.
At least one of them is about to get Shangjuan Lemon on it if all goes well.
Did your Yuzu make it through the 2020 winter?? It dropped to 16F around here last Feb.
Looks milder for this year.
Yes, I’ve had it for at least 6 years in the ground unprotected, maybe 8. Before last year I think I’ve been underfeeding it, and its on flying dragon which is very dwarfing, so its still small.
It loses leaves in the colder winters, but little or no branch die back.
My first one died to the rootstock the first or 2nd winter, but it wasn’t yet well established. That’s one I just budded again last summer.
I have a wifi weather station in the orchard, but I think this is the first winter its been out there.
