New Jujubee problem, too many fruit

Shwon in the pic is a Shanxi Li. My Li is even worse. There are so many fruits I’m having to support branches with T-Posts.

I planted my Shanxi Li & Li 4/2016. Shanxi Li was from Trees of Antiquity. It grew to 7-8 ft last fall, & i cut back to 6 ft last winter. This summer it reached 9-10 ft before the weight of all the fruit bent the branches towards the ground. I wonder if the branches will have a permanent set. I’ve not had trees fruit set fruit so heavily so early in their life.

havent fed them anything. But I’ve noticed before how well they do in prepared beds. & my sprinkler system has a zone just for the jujubee’s.

hj is also quite notorious, apart from being repeat-offenders as juveniles. As young adults, they are clearly evolving into hardened and relentless criminals.

‘waterboarding’ further emboldens them, especially in sin city conditions. Capital punishment is the only way to put an end to their rampage. Even that is hard to do.

kidding aside, jujus are easy to stiffen and train into 7 foot bonsai’s. Just lop off apical buds of upright growth, say, if an upright stem’s growth spurt attains 3 feet, lop it down to a foot to confer apical dominance on the long laterals(since the lower laterals are generally longer and thicker than those near the apical bud of upright growth) . If scions were grafted really low, you could do this at a really low level and create a lattice of short upright stems with thick and long laterals.

Bob,

My Honey Jar jujubes are setting real good this year. I moved them all to full sun last year. The weird weather made them somewhat barrel shape this year. Kind off cool looking!

Looks great! Full sun really helps. They should taste good now, and will be better when they turn a little brown. All my new trees are in full sun; 12 ft between rows

are those really hj’s? Have been watching hj’s and never seen that configuration. Especially the incredible uniformity among the fruits. As if they conspired collectively with a ‘theme’

have seen the intriguing phenomenon occur among some in the RT series(in this desert), so perhaps there’s something about nebraska conditions which hj’s react to.

Yes, they are Honey Jar. They were round last year. I just ate two green ones today and they are already good.

What spacing are these? I am making a new planting and curious the minimum spacing for trees that I want to maintain at 8’ tall. Do they need 8’ spacing or are they more upright and narrow?
