Is it alright to take the tape off of my grafts if it’s breaking down anyway? Or should I retape for protection?
I think you’re good to go with the grafts uncovered.
John,
If I could make a suggestion if you get much wind there like we do consider trimming off a few leaves on top if it’s getting top heavy. That graft union area will be weak a while yet. Don’t trim the graft unless it’s really running away. Many people on here tie a stake on the tree and on the scion to strengthen it while the graft union heals as an alternative to trimming grafts. If the scions haven’t grown much yet disregard that I brought it up. Nice looking graft! Great Job!
I’ll watch out for that thanks
John,
How windy is at the Cape? We don’t have many windy days. My street is also surrounded by tall trees so they are our wind breaker. Otherwise, I would protect the grafts like Clark mentioned.
Only my plum grafts that grow like weeds.
you should put a bamboo cane as guardian of the graft or air or a bird can break the graft union point
ditto matrix… if I had that much vigorous growth from a graft like that, I can assure you that at any second a bird or gust of wind would break it right out… the day before I’d intended to go out and install a bamboo stake and secure the graft to it.
Thankyou I will use some type of stick to hold up. It looks so strong.
We are in a pretty windy area.
I trim about 2-4 feet of growth off my grafts their first year. Staking is even better.
