My peach tree is going into it’s second year and I only have two good scaffolding branches. The tree is sending out new branches near the bottom of the trunk and along the top of the scaffolding branches. I am considering notching to encourage new scaffolds. Anyone have suggestions on notching, e.g., depth of notch?
I’m not sure it will work on a peach tree but just use a sharp saw to cut through green into sapwood about an inch wide and above a nodule within then next two weeks. Your best bet may be to use one of the low shoots to become your permanent tree by tying it to vertical using the existing trunk.
You will know within a few weeks if the notching works.
